Banff has around 10,000 residents and is surrounded by national park on all sides. For a town that size, the live music scene is genuinely active. On a good Saturday night you can follow it from one end of the evening to the other without going far.

Here's how the crawl goes.

Stop 1

Beaver Bar at Samesun Hostel

6:00pm - 8:00pm

The Beaver Bar is Banff's only backpacker pub right on Banff Avenue. With a crowd made up of travellers from all over, the energy can be anything on a given night, which is part of what makes it a good place to start. Think of it as a gear-up spot more than a destination. The bar runs regular events: live music, open mics, and the occasional karaoke or bingo night. Worth checking what's on when you arrive.

Stop 2

St. James's Gate

8:00pm - 10:00pm

St. James's Gate is a proper Irish pub, built in Dublin and shipped over. Live music starts at 8:00pm on Saturdays. You're leaving at 10:00pm for the next stop, but the music runs till midnight if you want to linger. The acts cover folk, blues, country, pub classics, and whatever else fits the room. It's a warmer, more neighbourhood-feeling spot that draws a good mix of locals, and this is where the night begins to really kick off.

Stop 3

The Dusty Boot Saloon

10:00pm - 12:00am

The Dusty Boot Saloon is BHC's country bar on Banff Avenue, boots on the floor and a dance hall energy that kicks up properly at 10:00pm. I've played here a few times and I'll say that while Banff's community doesn't scream Alberta, this place definitely leans into its culture. Worth getting a taste of it. With a dedicated dance floor, it has all the ingredients of somewhere louder and more physical, whether the night goes there is up to you.

Stop 4

Rose and Crown

12:00am - late

The Rose and Crown runs live music every night of the week. Music starts at 10:00pm if you want to arrive earlier, but coming in at midnight means you're arriving when the room already has momentum. On Saturdays there's a $5 cover. You're going to pay it, and afterwards you'll tell everyone it was worth it.

One name to know: Brent Lee. He's a local legend, the kind of musician who has opened for Johnny Cash and still turns up to play pub classics and country rock for a packed room on most days of the week. When he's on, the place is usually full for good reason.

A note on guarantees

These times work well for Saturdays, but live music schedules can shift. Of the four stops, the Rose and Crown and the Dusty Boot both boast live music every night of the week, reliable anchors if something else falls through on a given evening. If one of the earlier venues isn't delivering, you can always move on early. The crawl is a guide, not a contract.

Go have some fun, and if you want to check if I'm playing anywhere on a Saturday or any other day of the week, view my upcoming sets.
